As we gear up to launch the procurement of contractors for the road construction works, we continue to share the human-interest stories of the men and women set to benefit from this Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) funded Transport and Land Compact in Malawi (2024-2029).
Mercy Moto is a 52-year-old restaurant owner at Chantulo Trading Centre, Mangochi. For 30 years, she has served travellers with her famous tea and food, but the poor condition of the 79 km Chantulo-Mkutumula road has meant that the number of customers has remained dismal, especially during the rainy season.
With the upcoming road construction under the Compact, Mercy hopes for more travellers which should translate into increased income to better support her family of 12. Her story is just one of many along the over 300 kilometers (about 186.41 miles) of paved roads that will be built.
We cannot wait to revisit Mercy’s business in 2029, or earlier, and capture her transformation and that of entire communities, after the competition of the Compact.
