Transport – The Accelerated Growth Corridor Project (AGC)
The USD $244 million AGC Project will invest not only in road infrastructure, but also in policy and institutional reforms, such as decentralization of district road maintenance.
The AGC Project seeks to reduce travel time and reduce costs for smallholder farmers through the improvement of targeted roads in selected transport “corridors”.
The project will also carry out periodic maintenance on selected main roads and improve approximately 376 km of some link roads and feeder roads associated with the selected corridor roads. These include periodic maintenance of the 35 km Golomoti-Monkey Bay (M10) road from Golomoti to Chamtulo.
There are four corridor roads, totaling 287 km to be upgraded, including:
1. Mkanda- Linga Road
- The Mkanda-Linga corridor road is 88kms in length strentching from Mkanda in Michinji and passing through Masumbe-Nsuname-Chimwankango-Estate 74-Kalanga-Gogo-Nthuduwala-Kamtukuwa-Kamboni-Kaziwa-Malipela-Rusa-Kapaladza-Chiujeni-Kayesa-Katcheleza and terminating at Linga in Kasungu.
2. Chileka – Likuni road
The Chileka-Likuni corridor road is 53 kms in length stretching from Chileka in Lilongwe, passing through Chisaka-Kafinya-Ming’ongo-Kachawa-M’davayani-Mvenja-Ndaula-Kawiri-Phiri Lanjuzi-Malingunde-Tanga-Malili-Chiwenga, terminating at Chigwirizano in Lilongwe.
3. Chikwawa-Euthini road
The 67 km Chikwawa-Ethuini Road starts in Chikwawa in Rumphi and passes through Thulwe-Bowe-Vwaza-Kazuni-Enkwelei-Amon Munthali-Mpherembe-Kabwafu Turn-Off-Emangeni-Mzambazi.
4. Chantulo-Mkutumula road
The Chantulo-Mkutumula corridor is 79 kms and starts in Mkutumula in Ntcheu, passing through Banda-Handa-Chikande-Leveni-Black-Naunje-Mphika-Mtonda-Phirilongwe-Khungwa-Muonekera-Maloya-Chilonga-Chimvuwu-Msikidzi-Mteleleka-Nankumba, terminating in Chamtulo in Mangochi.
The project will further carry out periodic maintenance on selected main roads and an improvement of approximately 376km of some link roads and feeder roads linked to the corridor roads.
The project will also carry out periodic maintenance section of the Golomoti-Monkey Bay (M10) road from Golomoti to Chamtulo (35km).
In addition, the AGC project will assist in carrying out reforms in the transport sector including the following; capacity building and technical assistance of district councils, technical assistance to the roads authority, market regulation for inclusive growth, funding for road maintenance and competitiveness of transport services.
